As you are all by now aware, I am working at a car and campervan rental place in the Queenstown airport. So far its been great and I have realized in this time that I might actually be a people person after all. Who would have guessed? There was even an older man from Ireland the other day that told me that I have the gift of the gab! HA! Oh well, if it means that they book more cars so that I get more commission, I am happy to talk to anybody about anything thing that they want for just about as long as the want.
But that’s not the point of today’s little entry here. Today’s entry is about those little bonuses that come along with working at an airport. I’m talking about seeing all of the people that are coming into town and Queenstown is a mecca for people from all walks of life to come and explore the self-proclaimed adventure capital of the world. Since I started working here, I have seen Peter Jackson (director of the Lord of the Rings and King Kong) and one of the Princes from the United Arab Emirates (he was in the biggest private jet I have ever seen). That’s all well and good and it is quite exciting to see someone close up that you have only ever seen in the glossy magazines, but there are lots of other semi-celebrities that come through the airport here that I have never heard of and that when I realize that as an American, I’m more out of the loop than I would like to believe.
I’m sitting here at my computer today and it is a fantastically gorgeous day outside and I would like nothing more than to just head down to the lake with a book at a cup of coffee and enjoy the fleeting summer sunshine, but sadly that is not to be. While I’m dreaming of being outside, my co-worker is watching as team after team of netball payers pass by our desks and she is finding it incredibly difficult to maintain her composure and contain her excitement. She has, on more than one occasion this morning, tried to flag one of them down to say hi. She did manage to get one of the player to stop and that’s when we learned that there was a netball tournament in town starting today which is why they are all flying in. But here is the problem, first of all I don’t even know what netball is. I had to google it to learn that it’s similar to basketball but they don’t dribble the ball (weird, don’t you think?). Second, because I had never even heard of netball before today I certainly had never heard of any of these teams. And finally, because I have never heard of any of these teams, I cannot get star struck by the apparently very famous netball players that keep walking less than five feet in front of my desk.
Note to self: must spend more time acting like a local and less time acting like a tourist which means learning about local sports teams and musicians.
